At dinner, Mack pulls me aside for yet another one of his wonderful cigars with two glasses of scotch. “So, Jake, when I went upstairs at nine this morning, I saw your door was wide open and empty. Want to fill in the blanks?” he asks, eyebrows raised and his mouth slightly curved. “I guess you don’t have to though since for the past two days, the sexual tension between you two have been off the charts.”

I only nod; he doesn’t want details, which I know for a fact.

“Be gentle with her heart. I know I told you she could handle herself and she can. However, she may act icy but hell, she’s as fragile as they come.”

His statement is one I wouldn’t buy for a minute until I had seen her in the car today, trembling at the memory of her mom.

“Funny you say that, at first I called her Ice Queen, now I’ve changed it to Ginger.”

“Why is that all redheads have to have some sort of the nickname referring to their hair?” he asks.

I chuckle and think of the one redhead that I love deeply and continue to. “I’m not sure, my sister is a redhead, like fire engine red and I always called her Cherry. Her hair is not quite as auburn as Sasha’s color.” Looking at Mack, he has more on his mind, a hell of a lot more by the looks of it and I ask, “You want to share anything with me?”

“No, I have a lot I can say but Sasha is a big girl. She tells people what she wants them to know.”

Taking a deep breath, I respond, “This is just a fun holiday affair, I can’t do much more nor can she.”

Standing up, draining the rest of the scotch he’d poured us both from earlier, he only says, “Yeah, good luck with that.”
